MONOLOGUE COMPETITION
Judging and Awards:
- Two entries per person are allowed.
- Each entry will cost $10 to offset the cost of professional and unbiased judges.
- Two and three person scenes are allowed provided they are within the two-minute time limit. One monetary award will be given to that group should they win, meaning the group would split the award money.
- A panel of professional judges will be used for each age group.
- Judges will be evaluating the following: physical presentation/blocking, characterization and emotion, engagement and variety, vocal projection and clarity, choice of monologue and understanding of text, poise, content and delivery.
- Age groups are divided as follows: Youth under 10, Youth 11-14, Youth 14-17, and Adult.
- Adjudication in each category will be written critiques with scoring.
- There will be 3 winners for each youth category. First prize will be $75, second prize $50 and third prize $25. All winners will be asked to perform at the PAAC Celebration of the Arts August 19. If the Youth winners are students at a community or local theater program, we will include that information with their name when promoting the winners.
- For the Adult category, the winner will be awarded $150, second place $75, and third place $50. All adult winners will be asked to perform at the PAAC Celebration of the Arts.
- There will be an additional “People’s Choice” award given to the monologue that receives the most votes in our online campaign. This award will be $50.
- All winners will be announced and featured on our website.
- We reserve the right to share any monologues on social media and our website.
- Winners will be contacted before the festival August 19 and awards will be given at the festival.
Competition General Rules
- ALL entries must be suitable for family and community viewing with regards to subject matter. Violation of this rule is grounds for disqualification.
- All performance selections must come from a published play/ musical. Monologues may not come from movies, television, etc.
- All performance entries must be memorized.
- No costumes please. Props only if necessary for the scene.
- Maximum Length of entry must be no longer than 2 minutes. The slate does not count toward the overall time. The timer will begin with the first word or blocking of the monologue.
Monologue Rules:
- Before the monologue, please present a slate. In the slate (introduction), the contestant must state their first and last name, name of character, title of the play and the name of the playwright before beginning. If you belong to a theater academy or are a student of a local theater, you may add their name after your own.
Filming Tips for your Monologue:
- Camera - Only one stationary camera may be used. No closeups. Please make sure that the entire performer is visible on the screen (head to toe). This may limit your blocking a bit as you will need to make sure you are always in the camera shot. Since you will be submitting this, you have as many chances as you need to get it right!
- Filming in horizontal format is preferred.
- Sound - Film in a quiet space. Just like a live performance, please make sure that you project your voice so the microphone on your device can pick up everything you are saying.
- If possible, try to film against a wall that does not provide a lot of distractions (not a lot of pictures, etc.). We want to see you and all your hard work.
- Likewise, please make sure you are not wearing the same color as the wall behind you.
- As you would in person, take care in choosing what to wear. Try not to wear clothing that is distracting or that does not allow you the freedom of movement you need. Please keep jewelry and hair out of your face so the adjudicators can see your facial expressions clearly.
